A Guide on How to Cancel a Halifax Credit Card

Do you want to cancel your Halifax credit card? Maybe you have finally paid it off, or you have a different card now with better interest rates. Whatever your reason for closing your Halifax credit card account, it will be easier to do if you follow this guide. Below are the different ways that you can cancel a Halifax card.

Cancel by Telephone

1) Call Halifax customer services on 0345 720 3040 and press 5 for credit card enquiries. It will ask you to state the reason for your call, so you should say “cancel credit card” as clearly as possible. Otherwise, you can go through the numbered options and enter your credit card number until it connects you to a person.

2) You should answer any security questions by providing your personal details to confirm your identity. Then explain that you wish to cancel your Halifax credit card. You do not need to tell them why, but you do need to make sure that you pay off the outstanding balance. If you have not done this yet, then you’ll have to give your payment card details over the phone to pay off the remainder before you can close your card.

3) Halifax should remind you that after rule changes in late 2018, they will no longer adjust monthly direct debits after you make a one-off payment. They will not cancel your direct debit immediately as there may be trailing interest to pay off before they can fully close the card. Call back if you need to demand a refund.

Cancel Online

You can check your history and outstanding balance and make credit card payments online by signing into your online account. You should also be able to view the terms and conditions of the credit card agreement.

However, you will not have the option to simply click a button and close your credit card without speaking to the bank about it first. You can use the online branch finder to check the location and opening hours of the nearest Halifax bank to discuss cancelling your credit card in person. It is not a safe or reliable method of communication to send e-mails to Halifax with the details of your credit card account to ask to close it.

Cancel by Post

If you would prefer to cancel your credit card account in writing, then you can send a letter to Halifax at the address below. The credit card department will review your account and contact you to discuss the terms of closure and outstanding payments. You should include your credit card number, name, phone number, and address in the letter, and send it by a secure and trackable delivery method. Remember that this will take longer than if you were to go into a Halifax branch or speak to customer services by phone.
