A Guide on How to Cancel Your RAC Membership in 2019

One of the top five providers of breakdown cover in the UK is the RAC. However, if you want to cancel your membership and look for cover elsewhere, then read this guide. It will tell you how to cancel with the RAC.

Cancel by Telephone

1. The best way to cancel your RAC membership is by telephone. They will need to speak to the policyholder directly to amend or cancel a policy. Call the RAC on 0330 159 0740 and press option 3 to speak to someone in sales and service, and then press 2. Have your membership number and relevant details ready for them.

2. If you aren’t already aware of them, the adviser will go through the conditions of your policy with you. If you are cancelling within the cooling-off period, which is the first 14 days, you will get a full refund if you haven’t used their services during that time. When you cancel after this, you can only get a refund with no claims. The refund will consist of your premium minus the length of time you had cover and any additional administration fees. This will usually cost around £25. In the case of RAC vehicle insurance, there is a £55 cancellation fee as well when you cancel mid-term. You could wait until renewal to cancel and avoid fees.

3. You should be aware that RAC policies generally renew automatically at the end of the year. If you had a discount introductory price, your premium is likely to increase. You can choose to cancel your policy up to 14 days after the renewal date if you are not happy with the new price. Discuss the issue with the customer services adviser if you want to negotiate the premium. However, if you do want to stay with the RAC for a better price, you should just cancel then re-join as a new customer. Otherwise, cancel and look elsewhere.

Cancel Online

To view and make amendments to your RAC membership online, log into your MyRAC account. Go onto the RAC website at rac.co.uk and click on the “Log In” or “Register” links at the top of the page. This box will pop up for you to enter your e-mail address and password. If you have not activated your account yet, you must register with your membership details. You will then be able to see your policies and documents.

Otherwise, you can click on “MyRac” to go straight to this section of the website. It will show you the areas you can access with MyRAC. Click a button and log in whether you are an Insurance or Breakdown member.

You must be the main policyholder to create and log into a MyRAC account. Inside your account, you can change your personal details and view your products. Click on “Breakdown Products” in the menu on the left to look at your Breakdown cover. You can simply remove extras if you want to bring the cost down. If you want to cancel a product completely, the policy documents will include the terms and conditions for cancellation. It is important that you check these before contacting the RAC to cancel. You can speak to an RAC adviser via live chat in MyRAC, or use one of the other methods on this page to confirm that you want to cancel. Remember that you will lose your membership benefits when you cancel. For customers who pay annually, the RAC offer temporary membership without breakdown cover or mid-term cancellation with a refund. However, you can’t access these options online; you must ring customer services to discuss them.

Cancel by Post

Sometimes the phone lines or live chat can be busy, so another way to inform the RAC of your intent to cancel is to write a letter. Send it by a trackable method so you can prove that it was received. This will be helpful in cases where the RAC might have no record of a phone call or web chat regarding a cancellation request. Include your membership number and policy details in the letter. You should also request a letter back from them confirming your cancellation. Make sure that you send it with enough time to meet the cancellation deadline if you want to avoid paying the extra fees. Send the letter to the RAC address below.
