UNISON is the UK’s largest trade union, with almost 1.5 million members across 12 regions. If you are one of them but have decided to leave UNISON, this guide shows you how to cancel your UNISON membership.
Cancel by Telephone
1. Call UNISON on 0844 257 3946 and press 1 for the helpline for current UNISON members. You may have to hold the line until a UNISON adviser is available to take your call. When they pick up, you will need your membership number ready. This is the 4-8 digit number which is on your correspondence from UNISON.
2. When you discuss your membership, the UNISON representative may try to persuade you to stay with them by discussing your member benefits. If you have already decided to definitely leave, firmly tell them so. However, if you are a student or recently unemployed, you may be able to get a discounted membership instead. You can discuss a reduction in your monthly fee if your annual salary has become distinctly lower.
3. You can terminate your membership by cancelling your Direct Debit with your bank and simply ceasing to use your online account. If you do this, you can call to inform UNISON that you have cancelled it and tell the adviser straight away, so there is no opportunity for persuasive retention tactics. Cancelling the Direct Debit without informing UNISON could mean that your membership is still ongoing so you still owe them.
Manage your UNISON membership online by logging into your “My UNISON” account on their website.
On the “My UNISON” page, click on the login link which will take you to the login window. This window is time-sensitive, meaning that it will expire if you don’t enter your login details in a certain amount of time.
You will need to enter your 4-8 digit UNISON membership number and then your password, which you will have set up when you first registered for UNISON. You can click the link at the bottom for help if you have forgotten your password. Otherwise, click the “Login” button at the bottom to access your account.
Once you are successfully logged in, you can view and amend your membership details. Locate the option to cancel your membership, or remove your details from the account if you no longer want to use it. You might need to call UNISON on the phone to confirm that your membership has been terminated properly. Ex-members can always rejoin UNISON at any time, but must wait 4 weeks before being able to get help.
Cancel by Post
If you are unable to cancel online or by phone, you can always send a letter to UNISON notifying them that you wish to leave. You should contact your bank separately to cancel your Direct Debit and make sure that it does not continue in the meantime. Include your name, address, date of birth, and membership number in the letter so they can confirm your identity and account. Explain that you are going to cancel your Direct Debit effective from X date and that you no longer wish to a UNISON member. Include your phone number as well in case UNISON needs to contact you about this. Send a letter to UNISON at the office address here:
